XAU₮, Tether’s Gold-Backed Digital Asset, Receives Shariah Certification, Unlocking New Pathways for Islamic Banks, Institutions, and Individuals Worldwide

Certification expands access to digital gold, bridging physical bullion ownership with modern blockchain infrastructure

27 July 2026 – Tether, the largest company in the digital asset industry, today announced that XAU₮, Tether’s gold-backed digital asset, has officially received a Shariah compliance certification from Amanah Advisors, led by Mufti Faraz Adam.

The certification confirms that XAU₮ aligns with core Islamic finance principles, enabling Muslims worldwide to access physical gold ownership digitally within a fully shariah-compliant structure. The milestone represents a significant development at the intersection of tokenized real-world assets and Islamic finance, combining one of history’s most trusted stores of value with the efficiency of blockchain-based infrastructure.

For more than 1,400 years, gold has played a foundational role in Islamic finance as a reliable store of wealth. At the same time, global financial infrastructure is rapidly digitizing, creating demand for assets that preserve traditional value while offering modern accessibility. XAU₮ was designed to bridge these two worlds. Each XAU₮ token represents direct ownership of physical gold held in Swiss vaults. The structure avoids leverage, interest-based mechanisms, and speculative derivatives, reinforcing its position as a transparent, asset-backed digital representation of gold.

The Shariah certification confirms that TG Commodities, S.A. de C.V., as the issuer of XAU₮, meets key requirements, including:

  • Real ownership of physical gold
  • Clear and verifiable asset backing
  • No riba (interest)
  • No leverage or speculative derivatives
  • Transparent reserve structure

Islamic finance represents one of the fastest-growing segments of global finance, while gold remains a cornerstone asset across many Muslim-majority markets. Yet until now, few digital products have successfully aligned modern asset infrastructure with established Shariah frameworks, rules, and regulations.

The certification of XAU₮ opens new opportunities for Islamic banks integrating digital gold offerings, takaful and halal savings products, long-term wealth preservation strategies, tokenized trade finance and collateral applications, and institutions seeking compliant exposure to gold markets. Rather than creating synthetic exposure, XAU₮ connects blockchain infrastructure directly to physical gold ownership, expanding accessibility without changing the underlying principles that have defined gold’s role for centuries.

As tokenization moves from concept to real adoption, products backed by tangible assets are increasingly shaping the next phase of digital finance. With Shariah certification, XAU₮ demonstrates that blockchain-based financial products can align with long-established cultural, ethical, and institutional frameworks, unlocking broader participation across global markets.

“Gold has always represented stability and trust across cultures and generations,” said Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether. “With XAU₮ now recognized as Shariah compliant, we are expanding access to digital gold in a way that respects Islamic finance principles while leveraging the transparency and efficiency of blockchain technology.”

The certification is expected to support the expansion of XAU₮ across:

  • GCC countries where Islamic finance structures are well established
  • South Asia and parts of Africa, where gold remains a trusted savings asset and digital finance adoption is accelerating
  • Global financial centers supporting Islamic finance desks and institutional adoption of tokenized assets

Amanah Advisors will continue to work closely with Tether to develop practical guidelines and governance frameworks to support the wider adoption of XAU₮ in a Shariah-compliant manner, particularly where XAU₮ is acquired through secondary markets.

Tether will support the rollout with multilingual educational resources and regional communication initiatives tailored to institutional and retail audiences.
